About commitments

I wanted to run a marathon this year, and i made a commitment to myself to attempt at least... Well, I did the first attempt. I managed to finish, but walking the second half because I think I have overworked my foot.
That is not surprising as this year the longest distance I ran was 8km, and last year 21km... Needless to say that during the past two months I barely trained for various reasons (excuses, I know).
What really helped to finish was the decision that I committed to, and the path that did not have a good option of quitting.
So I can give myself a "soft yes" for this bucket list.
What is your process of making commitments and following those?
