Who and What - management perspective Now let’s take a look from a different angle. If we look back 50-30 years, at work people would care about results, KPIs, deliverables. Psychological aspect or people development was more from the angle of the role/deliverables/skills. If we look at the modern work environment (at least in the bigger companies) there is a big focus on personal development whether it is about specific skills or emotional development. So, we tend to look deeper than just the hard/soft skillset. I believe it is super important to help team members find their passions, strengths and path that would correlate the best with those desires. I would say that’s the “coaching” part of management. That is more of the “who” discussions and goals/plans. However, there is still business to be covered and if a person has a certain role, they should at least do the minimum that the role requires and invest time in learning the skills and contributing in a way for what they are being paid. So here comes “management” part of the management – how to make things happen. That would be more tactical and “what” focused conversation: what needs to be done. For example, if the person is an engineer but dreams of being a singer (both totally random examples), of course we can discuss about the steps to get on this path, however while the person is taking that engineering role there are expectations of that role to be fulfilled, and probably it makes sense to build a separate plan for that before transition really happens. What do you think?
